Houston, now in its 73rd year, provides a broad spectrum of programs to serve the community. As one of the city’s largest community service organizations, The Center offers social, recreational, cultural and educational activities for chil­dren, families and seniors. The Houston Senior Olympics was established by the JCC in 1989 to provide local adults with the opportunity for age-appropriate, citywide athletic competi­tion. The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) and The Texas Senior Games Association (TSGA) sanction the Houston Senior Olympics. The Games promote the Olympic philosophy of fitness and excellence through competition. The Center is proud to produce these games which encourage physical fitness, exercise and new levels of personal achievement for older men and women. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to have been an integral part of the Houston Area Senior Olympics from the inception in 1989. Once again, we will be offering venues for the games including the Fonde Community Center. As one of the largest urban parks and recreation departments in the country, citizens of all ages are able to enjoy activities and programs throughout the year in 314 developed parks; seven 18-hole golf courses; 41 swimming pools (six Olympic-size), 56 community centers; 3 major tennis centers (60 total courts) ; 156 neighborhood tennis courts (81 sites); 174 baseball fields (lighted and unlighted); 121 football/soccer/rugby fields; 108 air basketball courts; 80 miles of nature, hike and bike trails; 42 miles of trails along Brays, Sims, Hunting, Buffalo, White Oak and Halls Bayou; 230 parks with playgrounds, 9 water playgrounds; the Alkek Velodrome; and the Houston Garden Center.

The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority is a political subdivision of the City, the County and the State of Texas, created for planning, acquiring, establishing, developing, constructing or renovating of sports and community venue projects and related infrastructure. The Sports Authority is involved in many of the exciting sporting events that visit Houston, and we want YOU to be a part of that excitement. We are always looking for volunteers to help out with wonderful events like the Texas State Senior Games, NCAA Division II Championships, AAU Junior Olympics and many more!
